"Everything That Happens Will Happen Today," David Byrne and Brian Eno

David Byrne and Brian Eno in younger days

You know David Byrne — the pop iconoclast who founded the Talking Heads and is coming back to Spokane — but Brian Eno is one of those guys you’ve heard of but you’re not sure where. Well, he’s kind of a big deal, having worked all over the map — he played keyboards for Roxy Music, produced the epic U2 album The Joshua Tree and even wrote the music for the videogame Spore. Yeah, these two are birds of a feather, and their first collaboration was in 1981; this record, 27 years later, is their second. (Byrne’s Feb. 19 gig at the Fox is part of his “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno” tour.)

Self-released

This record is alternately acoustic and ambient, more moody than poppy. There are a couple misses, but overall it’s very cool, filled with smooth grooves and odd ballads. Eno calls this stuff “electronic gospel,” and Byrne’s lyrics offer a prophetic commentary on the early 21st century. I call it my new favorite record.
