Professional Lubchenco has an undergraduate degree in biology from Colorado College (1969), a master’s in zoology from the University of Washington, and a doctorate from Harvard University in marine ecology. Lubchenco was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ecological Society of America and the International Council for Science. She has received nine honorary degrees and an array of awards including the MacArthur Fellowship (or “genius award”). She’s taught for years Oregon State University where she was Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology. Her research interests include biodiversity, climate change, sustainability science and the state of the oceans.

Viewpoint Lubchenco is an advocate for wild salmon populations. She regards her appointment as an opportunity to get unfiltered scientific opinions heard. She is one of the world’s most cited ecologists. (SS)
