Recipient of the Robert E. Kennedy Award for best California undergraduate high school
journalism student (1975), Bob Johnson has since won 95 national writing awards for stories
with topics ranging from a man’s triumph over the depths of addiction to a husband coping
with the suicide of his wife, a gay athlete’s decision to come out, and how
residents protected their neighborhood bowling center during the 1992 “Rodney King"
riots in Los Angeles.
He is the author of the book
Mr. 900: The Glenn Allison Story — The
Behind-the-Scenes Account of One of the Greatest Achievements... and Travesties... in American
Sports History (2019) and edited (and wrote most of) the 300-page 100th anniversary issue (2013) of
Bowlers Journal International magazine. Johnson also wrote the syndicated “Wine Lines” column for 21 years, and since moving to the Inland Northwest in 2024, has written
several wine-focused articles for
Inlander, including a guide on
how to pair rosé and a profile of
Winescape Winery.
