To keep the spirits up, this desert isle requires variety. Full of contrast and running the gamut of moods, The Pixies' Doolittle alone could be the perfect candidate. Sweet yet ferocious, the standout track, "Wave of Mutilation" would bring any landlubber to their knees. The perfect antidote would be "Here Come Your Man."

Going back a few decades, Electric Light Orchestra's New World Record would deepen the mystery and magic of any seaside night.

Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness delivers on many levels. Inspiration to self-loathing and many emotions in between, this deluxe double platter set starts with a beautiful piano solo. Then the roller coaster begins.

Pere Ubu's short-lived major label career yielded two excellent albums. The last one, Worlds In Collision was borderline pop. The lead singer, Dave Thomas, has a warm and friendly voice reminiscent of voice actor Sterling Halloway.

The Replacements did some of their best work after signing with Sire records. My favorite, Pleased to Meet Me, showcases lead-singer Paul Westerberg's writing ability. This disk is a celebration of wine, solitude and burned out Big Stars.
