The Spokane Symphony announced Tuesday that British conductor James Lowe would be its new music director beginning this fall for the 2019-20 season. He will be the eighth music director in the symphony's 74-year history.

The 43-year-old Lowe was selected at the end of a two-year process on the recommendation of a search committee consisting of six symphony musicians and six symphony board members. The violist is a resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, and is currently chief conductor of the Vassa City Orchestra in Finland. His contract with the Spokane Symphony is for three years.

When the Inlander interviewed Lowe during his weekend visit to conduct the Spokane Symphony in February, he seemed an affable chap with a great answer when we asked him about his "guilty pleasures:"

"Hmm, as long as your proclivities lie within the bounds of the law I'm not sure I believe in the concept of guilty pleasures," Lowe said. "I love food and wine and could happily spend a lazy afternoon in an English village pub in front of the fire with a pint, a good book and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps. Guilty for skipping Pilates? No way!"

Lowe's stint at the helm of the Spokane Symphony will begin with the season-opening Masterworks 1: American Rhythms shows Sept. 14-15.
