'All Day,' Girl Talk

Call your friends. Tell them a dance party is cookin’ up at your place.

'All Day,' Girl Talk
Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk)

Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) is the king of the music mash-up. If you’re not familiar, it’s like this: Take guitar riffs, drum parts, vocal lines and other pieces of existing songs, and blend them together to create something completely different. In the wrong hands, it can be a car wreck. In the hands of Gillis, it’s thrilling. Fusing rap vocals with classic rock, ’80s tunes, Top 40 hits and hard-rock anthems, he creates a completely seamless, swirling broth of samples that are recognizable but no longer quite familiar.

Gillis’ masterful direction allows Black Sabbath and Tupac Shakur to flow perfectly, Depeche Mode and the Steve Miller Band to jive triumphantly, and Radiohead and ‘Ol Dirty Bastard to mix like chocolate and peanut butter. At over 70 minutes, All Day’s nonstop barrage can be exhausting. Unless, of course, you’ve got friends over — then it’s the sweetest party soundtrack ever.
