'Melange EP,' Mon Cheri

Six happy little tracks from one of Spokane's favorite bands

It’s honestly kind of hard not to like Mon Cheri — and that’s precisely the greatest achievement and biggest flaw of the beloved local three-piece. On their upcoming EP release, the band offers six happy little tracks. At times, their combination of sugarcoated male and female vocals and skilled musicianship is a perfect mix, producing beautiful, infectious harmonies — as on “Opus,” a song that marches down a moody, introspective path before sassing things up mid-song in a way that feels very honest and quite personal.

Mon Cheri is, obviously, a musically talented group. They show that they’re capable of many sounds and emotions here: “Baby Bird Fell” is a heart-aching slow dance, while “Psyche” is a twangy, road-trip track. It’s no joke that this EP is a mélange of sounds. I’m just curious which one the band will pursue in the future: the sounds that sound good or the songs that feel honest.
