Verse in Silence

The institute that commemorates Thomas Merton (1915-68; author of The Seven Storey Mountain) has given awards for contemplative poetry for the past nine years. Out of 1,200 entrants this year, the winner was Laurie Klein of Deer Park, for her poem about the miraculousness of larynx surgery. Read Klein's poem and biography at www.mertoninstitute.org.

Celtic Crooneress

Tierney Sutton is beautiful, funny, Grammy-nominated (with another nom sure to follow for last month's On the Other Side) and (unlike so many performers) she sounds just as good live as she does on her CDs. Note to SJO: Bring her back!

Civic Pride

The best community theater productions this year in two states are both from our area: Lake City Playhouse's musical about a resuscitated quartet of do-wop singers, Forever Plaid, was voted best in Idaho, while Spokane Civic Theatre's musical about presidential killers, Assassins, won for Washington. They'll face off in regional competition in Tacoma on March 24-25. Break your legs, people!

Better Than the Other 12

They're a sextet (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion) that plays contemporary chamber music. They appeared on Osvaldo Golijov's Ayre with Dawn Upshaw, and their name derives from a Wallace Stevens poem ("Thirteen Ways ..."), so you know they're cool. They're eighth blackbird, playing UI's Admin Building in Moscow, Idaho, on Tuesday, March 20, at 7:30 pm. Tickets: $18; $15, seniors; $8, students.
