by MICHAEL BOWEN & r & & r & Her Name Rings a Bell & r & & r & While Americans lined up to vote this week, Canadians (who had their own big election last month, peeps) welcomed the nation's new dominion carilloneur: Dr. Andrea McCrady, who moved to Ottawa from Spokane last month. McCrady has juggled her love of the carillon (she's been the chief bell ringer at the Cathedral of St. John) with a medical career at Group Health Northwest, but decided to take the plunge into music full time after winning an audition in July. The first tune in her debut concert from Parliament Hill? O Canada.

Post-Election Potpourri

So many ways to relieve your post-election exhaustion with artistic experiences. Just be glad that the guy who won actually has a policy for improving our nation's arts ... It's not every weekend in Spokane that you can see an opera about the so-called Father of the Atomic Bomb, Robert Oppenheimer. On Saturday at 10 am at NorthTown's Regal Cinemas, catch a broadcast of John Adams' Doctor Atomic ... Meet four artists at Friday's 5-8 pm reception at City Hall's Chase Gallery: oil painter and "sound sculptor" Rick Garcia, acrylic painter and EWU grad Robert Kraut, social commentator and space cadet Charlie Schmidt, and spiritual painter and EWU professor Marvin Smith. Their show runs through Dec. 31 ... The GLBT Film Festival portrays coming-of-age movies for gay people, lesbian love in 1906, and a transgendered saga entitled She's a Boy I Knew on Friday-Saturday at 7 pm and Saturday-Sunday at 3 pm at EWU Riverpoint's Phase One Classroom Building, with tickets at $5-$8 ... a collection of antique toys opens at the MAC on Friday and runs through March ... This time, the Whitworth jazz concert is bringing in two musicians who are making it in New York while still in their 20s: Dan Keberle's son Ryan, who plays trombone, and Erica vonKleist, who plays flute and sax. Ten bucks gets you into Cowles Auditorium on Saturday at 8 pm ... Beware the sound of a ticking clock and clap your hands for Tinkerbell as Christian Youth Theater Spokane presents Peter Pan at the Bing from Friday through Nov. 16.
