by Luke Baumgarten & r & Banff Mountain Film Festival & r & It's always tough to schedule the Banff Film Festival's road tour, which has stops all over North America and comes to Spokane this weekend. Simply securing rights to show a film once in Banff isn't enough - you have to get permission to play it innumerable times outside Banff as well. For that reason, the exact lineup of films in the three-day event remains a bit nebulous. At press time, Paul Fish, curator of the Spokane leg, only had three films locked in particular time slots. He's got another nine confirmed, though, so here they are, the 12 Banff films slated for Spokane showings that we know about. There'll be one or two others, depending on the intellectual property laws of certain cold, steep nations.

Friday: Charles, Edouardou le temps suspendu (26 min.) & r & As two brothers grow old on a mountain ranch, they contemplate isolation and the cycles of life. It's like An Unfinished Life without J. Lo. So much the better. Banff Best Film on Mountain Culture

Saturday: Magic Mountain (50 mins.) & r & All mountain challenges are not physical. Cynthia Hunt proves this as she tries with great difficulty to bring literacy to the women of Ladakh, India.

Sunday: The Ozarks (19 mins.) & r & Bouldering in the (guess ...) Ozark Mountains of Arkansas!

Dates and times TBA: Balancing Point (6 mins.) & r &

You could have won a Jury Award too, if you'd stacked up some rocks, kicked them over, then run the film backward and in slo-mo. Let that be a lesson. Banff Special Jury Award

Cavewoman (14 mins.) & r & This is a mixed climb film on Fiona Murray's ascent of the "Caveman." Watch her conquer the male-dominated sport with humor and verve.

Harvest Moon (39 mins.) & r & Swiss climbers tackle a new route on Thalay Sagar in northern India. As older climbers testify, that ain't easy.

High Fly Summits (13 mins). & r & Watch the French Soul Flyer team do crazy things with wing suits, skydiving, paragliding and skis over, on and around some tall-ass mountains.

The Khumbu Mighty-Mites (3 mins.) & r & Living high up the slopes of some mountainous Third World country isn't all starving and freezing. It's also making homemade skis, and then, skiing.

Lost People of Mountain Village (15 mins.) & r & This is the Spinal Tap of mountain culture movies. A mockumentary about a fake temple complex discovered by fake skiers and quarreled over by fake Anthropologists.

Red Bull Rampage (17 mins.) & r & Red Bull set out to prove its drinkers were way better at riding bikes down mountainsides than the drinkers of any other energy drink. They kicked Mountain Dew's ass, flat.

Bug Out (10 mins.) & r & Watch a 10-year-old climb a really tough boulder! Hear her talk about it afterward!

Solilochairliftquist (4 mins.) & r & The better you are at skiing, the more time you spend on chairlifts. That affords your average ski bum lots of sitting-and-thinking time. Witness the profundity! n
