Citizen Critique

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, reviewed by Wendy Rosenau

Let me preface this critique by saying I am a huge Lara Croft fan. I've squandered many enjoyable hours making that woman (who shortly became my idol) run, jump, climb and waste the bad guys. Okay. With that said, you'd think I'd love the movie. I wish. Instead of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, it would be more aptly named Lara Croft: Aint I Cool? See me ride my cool bike. See me sneer at the bad guys. See me drive my cool cars. See me sneer at the bad guys. When it's difficult to follow the action because the camera is too busy ogling Angelina Jolie, well, I'm irritated.

Not that it's her fault. It was the director's call, and the script didn't give her much choice either. They made her tough, but a real woman would have made for a better, more believable heroine. And the story? She has in her possession one half of the triangle upon which the fate of the world rests and rather than destroy it, she goes and gets the other half? Now I'm really irritated. The storyline defies logic in order to keep moving. Unacceptable.

And I really wanted to like it.
